LEARNING

The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live.

Mortimer Adler

What is art?

Art has been revolutionary, controversial, inspiring and intriguing. Above all, it has been thought provoking and an intellect builder. The College Board Profile of SAT's and achievement tests taken for the years 1990-1993 show that students who have four or more years of art instruction have higher math and verbal scores.

Here at Norland Elementary School, we are working to build the citizens of tomorrow. Through the exploration of visual arts, students are exposed to other cultures, history, science, writing and math. We encourage children to be creative, free, bold and flexible, but we also teach them skills of self-criticism and self-evaluation. We teach them to carry an original idea from beginning to end. We are building citizens whose self-esteem grows with their artistic progress, knowledge and the ability to make and appreciate beauty.

What is art at Norland Elementary School? It is a place where our students can establish their identity and brings their ideas to life.
